What is Snail Mail?

Pony Express How many times have you heard someone say “Just leave me a message on my voice mail” or “E-mail that to me”? If you are like most business people those expressions are a daily sermon.

The case in point:

A senior executive at a very high growth and high visibility company was beside himself with frustration when I asked him if his office was using E-mail yet. “Sure”, he said, “we’ve got the most efficient systems around for slowing everything to a snail’s pace. We’ve got E-mail and voice mail. I can’t get to anyone directly and they can’t get to me. I wish I could just pick up the phone and call a project meeting, get a simple answer to a pending problem, or just get a direct answer to a general question. Instead, I get this run-around about how this part of the project is being handled by someone else and they have been E-mailed with a part of the question.

We all know this frustration. We have a simple question and need to talk to a human about it. What we don’t need to do is wait around for someone to decide to get their messages and get back to us with an answer when we are on the phone, thereby leaving us voice mail that they say will be followed up with an E-mail to describe the details. The E-mail will be either too lengthy to read from the screen or reference various other voice mails and E-mails, so we will print it out to be read later.

To add insult to injury, your MIS manager will shortly be informing you that the systems are soon to be overloaded and you are going to have to consider purchasing an upgrade to handle the increased demand.

Conclusion:
Technology is a wonderful thing only when applied properly. Carefully consider who has your personal e-mail address and, when you consider it important, insist on voice-to-voice or face-to-face interchanges.
