After having spent the better part of a year developing a sophisticated computerized instrument, I was overseeing the final touches for its' introduction at an international trade show. Our people had been working for nearly three days straight when a salesperson from a competing organization seemed to be unable to control his curiosity. He was spotted by one of our salespersons as he began walking over to our area of the exhibition hall with a noticeably self confident and arrogant demeanor. Since we knew what was coming, we took the next 2 or 3 minutes to prepare a strategy.
Our salespersons immediately left the scene to avoid any unnecessary conflicts. The senior engineer on the project was chosen to greet our visitor with as much awe and respect as he could muster. It worked. The over zealous competing salesperson immediately began to brag about the capabilities of his company's system. By playing dumb with a believable amount of awe and respect for the market leader, our engineer came away with a full understanding of who our competition was and the capabilities of their system.
When I ambled over, the salesperson began to extol the virtues of, not only his system, but of the future developments that were being planned at his company. Therefore, within just a few minutes, our company had all of the information it needed to position itself far ahead of the industry leader.
Conclusion:
There is such a thing as company secrets. If you find someone is leaking information about your company, you must put a stop to it immediatly. Even the smallest bits of seemingly unimportant information, can set the stage for bigger things to come.
