Overwhelmed?

Bummer! With new business incorporations nearing an all time high annual rate of 800,000, it becomes increasingly difficult to imagine being overwhelmed with the success of a start-up. Imagine that you have done everything just right, luck has been on your side and all of the capital you wanted is yours with which to proceed. In other words, the process breaks down into three major steps:

1 - Design
2 - Develop
3 - Implement

If you were lucky enough to successfully accomplish items one and two, there is a very good chance that you will be overwhelmed with the implementation process. For obvious reasons, the mind set of the individuals who can come up with new ideas and sell them, differs dramatically from the people who can successfully produce the idea profitably.

There is a case in point, which will remain anonymous for now, that is destined to fail. A large regional distributor felt that it would be a good idea if he could realize the economies of scale by becoming a nationwide distributor. Understanding that this country was covered with competing regional distributors that were, for the most part, family owned and operated, he decided that expanding his own distributorship would be far too costly in both time and money. His solution was to create a new company and put together a prospectus that would raise the millions of dollars necessary to begin purchasing the other distributors. The IPO went off without a hitch and the first distributor purchased by the new company was his own. He then brought in a CFO and bought two other family owned distributors with a combination of cash and stock. More than a year later they don't have a central purchasing site, they don't have a central distribution plan, nor do they have a universal accounting practice. As a matter of fact, the main office of this publicly traded company doesn't have more than 5 employees.

Conclusion:
We doubt that this company will survive more than 5 years without some careful consolidation of the regional distributors into a national network with a common goal, direction and objective.
