When the artist moved to New York State from Canada in 1984, she lived in Saugerties, close to the Hudson River. Both the Saugerties Lighthouse and the Rondout Lighthouse in Kingston were close by and became subjects for her drawings.

Marita donated the original drawing of the Saugerties Lighthouse to the Conservancy to help raise funds to rehabilitate what was at that time a dying edifice. It is now an historic monument where one can make a reservation to spend the night.
