Never having known a grandmother left a void in Marita's life that she decided to fill by drawing her idealized version of one, "Oma". "It's amazing how many people recognize someone they know when looking at my sketch," says the artist. "I've touched something very universal - a warmth, a gentleness, a wisdom". "Oma" has become a role model for Marita.
Often animals trigger "people" images for the artist. For example, in "Highland Calf" Marita began by drawing the calf, never anticipating that from this image would emerge the haunting image of the young woman.
Similarly, in "The Bond", the old man and horse grew into each other to form a powerful partnership. The image of the man is one Marita can remember from childhood. "This face used to appear from time to time to provide strength and stability in my life," says the artist. "I needed to attempt to capture him on paper."
"The Race" was inspired by visits to the Saratoga Stables. The racing scene, the heirarchy of owners, jockeys, workers, the fans, fascinate the artist. She wanted to suggest a progression from young colt to race horse joined by the powerful face of the "owner". The face is a composite, not an actual person. The artist prefers the liberty of artistic license. "It allows me to play more freely with character," says Marita.
