About Marita Parisi's Art

First and foremost: I draw because I love to draw.
The Originals:

Pencil allows me to make a statement, tell the story I wish to tell and maintain my own personal style. Pencil is immediate, direct and always a challenge, inspiring and motivating me. I'm constantly trying to be better, to learn new ways to use the pencil. Many experimental drawings are just for me, never leaving the drawing table, but these teach me new approaches which are then incorporated into other pieces that do go public.

My subject matter comes from 52 years of living and observing, of reading and writing. One's past cannot help but become a part of the artwork. All of my life I have been closely connected to nature, wildlife and people who are close to the land and its creatures. These are my palette and inspiration. These are my teachers and companions.

My drawings come from a combination of things. I observe, I sketch, I photograph, I read, I imagine. Often research is a necessary part of what I do. I travel and attempt to experience firsthand as much as possible. I ask questions. And yes, I use some photographic references; after all, I portray realism. To get those lines around the eyes I need to see them close up. But imagination and artistic license play a major role in the final interpretation. Consider me to be a Storyteller in Pencil.

My materials consist of as many pencils as I can find. My favorites tend to be the harder pencils, 2H-9H, which produce those wonderful fine lines, but I still sometimes use the softer pencils, F,H, HB through to 6B. I work with lines and strokes, building and layering and using directional strokes to achieve certain effects.

My papers too are varied. Each paper responds differently to the various pencils. Only experimentation can uncover these new and magical properties: Strathmore Bristol, Hot Press Illustration Board, Watercolor papers are some of the papers I've enjoyed.

The Prints

To make my work affordable to everyone, I have prints made from my original drawings. Together with a printer, I experiment with papers and reproductions to achieve the best possible result. Each print is done as a black and white only to allow me to hand-color in a variety of ways. Sometimes I will use colored pencil, sometimes watercolor and sometimes I will pull my print through my Conrad etching press and do isolated unique experimental work. For special editions I will also hand emboss some prints with designs I have created on copper plate. And some specially pulled prints are remarqued.

For the special editions, it is necessary to contact me directly, since prices can vary with the complexity and uniqueness of the prints.
