About Mike Johnson
|Born in Indiana in 1946, Mike "escaped" to the south at an early age. Now an honorary native of North Carolina, his work is a reflection of his love and reverence for the rural south.
With no formal training, Mike is a self taught artist. He has worked as a graphic designer and art director for some of the largest electrical signage firms in the southeast culminating in his reaching a career goal by accepting a design position with Walt Disney in 1982.
Having reached the pinnacle of his profession as a graphic designer, and winning an array of awards, Mike turned his attention to his second career goal by becoming a noted pen and ink artist. He began by producing, with detailed clarity, realistic drawings capturing the southern character of times gone by. Traveling along country roads, he is constantly in search of those forgotten, deteriorating structures, once filled with life. He preserves them in pen and ink for future generations to view, long after these images of a by-gone era are crumbled and gone.
Mike continues to expand his subject matter and has acquired a large following for his drawings of dogs and cats. "Mike captures the entire essence of the animal's being in his drawings" offered one critic.
Today all of Mike's work receives critical acclaim wherever he exhibits, having acquired numerous show ribbons and pruchase awards. His drawings have become sought after acquisitions by private and corporate collectors throughout the United States and overseas.
