"So many people picture Native Americans as the stereotypical warriors fighting the cavalry or dancing and drumming in circles. I try to show people who celebrate life despite hardship and pain. The elders faces show me deep feelings of tolerance and sadness with a strength and calmness that never ceases to amaze."

"Many people have told me the eyes of the people in my paintings speak to them. Some are sad, some serene. One woman really liked a painting I did called From My Window. It shows a young girl on a windowsill looking out. The woman said, 'I'd really like that painting but I don't think I could live with it. The eyes are so sad.' Sometime I guess they're just too expressive. Another person bought a wolf painting because the eyes had captured the essence of the wolf, and he liked the way the eyes followed him from whatever angle they were viewed.
All of Mary's paintings are custom framed by her husband, David Brown. David uses exotic hardwoods such as Bubinga, Sapele, Padauk, Cocobolo, as well as more conventional woods like birdseye or tiger Maple, Red Oak, Ash,Poplar and Walnut. Many have inlaid or laminated designs which reflect a theme or design in the painting. Each, in itself, is a work of art enhancing the appearance and value of the artwork. |
